I recently retired my Windows PC with 6 SATA hard drives. I wanted to be able to easily get to old files (some as old as 30 years) that I had stored on the drives. My iMac reads NTFS drives via USB so I decided to purchase one of theses to try.It worked for about an hour then died. No response on the USB port. While it worked, it worked very well so I returned it for replacement and I was quite pleased with the replacement it so I ordered four more.Of this four one had a bad power supply. The unit would start to spin up the drive but then turn off then on then off once a second. I returned the enclosure for replacement. The replacement worked fine and I now had five of the six enclosures I needed.I ordered the sixth. It came in with a dead power supply. I returned it for replacement. The replacement came in with exactly the same power supply problem. I tried the PS on all of the enclosures and it wouldn't work on any of them. I returned it for replacement. The replacement just came. It, too, has a bad power supply. I'm returning it for refund. In my attempt to find 6 good SATA HDD enclosures I have found five and had to return 5-the last one for a refund, not replacement. That is a very high failure rate. Needless to say I won't be ordering one of these enclosures ever again.Update. I purchased the Firewire 400+800, eSATA, USB 2.0 drive enclosure manufactured by Acomdata from a local store. I've been using it on FW800 for several days and it has been working well. The 5 good ones are still working well, so I suspect I would have been quite happy with the enclosures I had to return were it not for bad power supplies.... I paired this with a Western Digital WD5000AAKS.Pros:*Well built, professional looking enclosure.*Bright blue Power on indicator on the front of the enclosure which flashes red (well it's kind of pink actually) to indicate read/write activity.*Average Read/Write speeds of 29 MB/s via USB 2.0 interface.Cons:*Gets quite warm after 1 hour. It lacks proper ventilation.*Unlike my other cheaper USB enclosure, it does not provide Disk information, temperature, S.M.A.R.T. or other performance information to my Disk Drive monitoring software. Nowadays this information is very important for keeping watch on the status of your drives thereby safeguarding your data.I should mention that while this lack of information could sometimes be the fault of the installed drive, I've never seen an instance where the faulty drive failed to register it's model number with the software. In this case the drive just registers the as "DMI Ultra HDD (500 GB)" which leads me to believe that the USB interface controller used in the case is at fault. That's a little disappointing really.... Read more...

Good enclosure, works well with Linux & Mac
I originally bought this enclosure to rescue data from the C: drive (640 GiB) of a WinPC with a failed motherboard. Then I reformatted it and hooked it up to an iMAC to use, 24/7, with Apple's Time Machine archive software, and it does very well at this.Setup was a snap - the drive just slid onto a fixed bus and fastened to the tray with 4 screws (included with the enclosure) - took about 10 minutes. The heat is noticeable but not really what I'd call excessive - the aluminum box and vents in both ends give it ample ventilation. Some minor downsides: The blue light on the front panel is a bit too bright - if you use this in a bedroom you may want to cover up the light. Also, unlike portable hard drives, it doesn't take its power from the PC but instead has to use a brick, thus limiting the portability.... Read more...

A bargain, and it works perfectly
At this price I was a bit skeptical about the quality, but it is excellent. Very easy to put in a 500 GB Hitachi SATA drive in just a few minutes. As somebody mentioned, have to be careful not to lose the tiny screws. It looks very good, is cool and silent when working, and it is well planned and thought out.I was pleased to find that it had a long power cord...too often they are too short on other products to reach my power strip or UPS.If I had to find something to complain about, it would be that the blue ON light is a bit too bright, but hey, if that is the worst, it is a great little product.... The aluminum case enclosing a WD Green (40% less power) Caviar Hard Disk Drive (WD15EARS) is warm to the touch, not hot, suggesting that the disk is running cool. A normal hard disk would run hotter. Placing the hard disk in the case is easy, but care must be given in plugging in the wiring inside. Connecting the drive to a USB port is easy and Windows XP (and higher) recognizes the drive in less than a minute. The case runs cooler when setup vertically on its included pedestal, compared to horizontally.Backup Use: Since the case has a power switch, the disk can normally be turned off and not affect computer operation. When I want a backup, I can flip the case switch on, and the disk will be recognized in less than a minute. Files to be copied can be identified. When through with the copying/backup, you would want to click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and click on your disk's name, and wait for confirmation. Then you can switch off the power to the case. If disk cannot be stopped, wait until you turn off the computer.... Read more...

Good value and quality for the money
I have some experience with hard drive enclosures. Previously purchasing an Eagle Tech IDE enclosure. I will say that this Acomdata enclosure feels higher quality and fits together more precisely than that Eagle Tech enclosure. This despite the fact that the Acomdata drive didnt cost more money. The tray of the Acomdata drive is aluminum which will dissipate heat, the connector in the unit feels solid enough to last, the access times and transfer times seem good, the unit looks good and is good quality. I am 100% satisfied with this purchase and will look to Acomdata in the future for similar product purchases.... Read more...
