READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. THIS IS CRUCIAL OR ELSE WILL NOT WORK.
How to install and get osu! started
DOWNLOAD THE INSTALLER BY NAVIGATING TO THE "INSTALLER" PAGE ON THE MENU OF THIS SITE
1) After you have downloaded the installer, open the installer. It should be named "osu!mac2016.zip".
2) Open the file. The installer should unpack, showing a folder with the required programs in it. It should look like the images below.
Move "osu!" in the "Applications" folder as shown in the images. Open the .dmg file to open and install XQuartz. After XQuartz installation, log in and out to get XQuartz working. This is necessary for XQuartz to create changes that make osu! work.
Put the osu! app only in the Applications folder. Directly open from the installer the .dmg to install XQuartz.
Inside of the .dmg disk image there is a installation package.
Open it.
Go through the steps to install XQuartz.
Check that XQuartz is installed inside the "Utilities" folder, which is inside of your Applications folder. Log out and log in again to let XQuartz change some computer things that'll make it work.
YOU MUST PUT THE "OSU!" APP IN THE APPLICATIONS FOLDER. IF ELSE, THE GAME WILL NOT FUNCTION AT ALL. MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE INSTALLED XQUARTZ, IT IS CRUCIAL FOR THIS VERSION/RELEASE OF OSU!MAC TO WORK.
3) Open osu!. XQuartz will open, and a terminal window should appear. Though it doesn't really matter, close that window. This is simply for organization.
4) After that, the osu! updater will launch, which should look something like the image at right.
5) Give the updater some time to work. It will reach 100% after some while, so don't quit the updater. After it is finished, for some unknown reason, osu! will crash. This probably has to do with compatibility with OS X, but DO NOT WORRY. The crash will not happen again. It should show a crash window like in Fig. 1.
6) After the crash, CLICK THE "RESTART" BUTTON. This will relaunch osu! and get it to start again - and it will launch the "osu! updater (up right image)" again. This is completely normal. Do not worry. It go up to 100% again, and osu! should launch again. You're almost finished!
7) After all these strange happenings, osu! should finally launch. Now you are able to log in and play.
How to make beatmaps (.osz files) automatically open up in the game, like on Windows
8) A extra highly recommended tip for you is that after you download a beatmap, then right-click and click "Get Info" option. Scroll down to find "Open with". Then, click on the dropdown menu to click on "Other". A list of applications will show. Find osu! in this list of applications. Click add, then while still in your "Get Info" window, click "Change all". The computer will prompt you if you want to open all .osz files in the osu! app. (Like the image below) Click "Continue". Now all beatmaps should open in osu! directly when you click on them. If you're confused about this extra process, then look below this section for visual guidance on how to do this.
9) Have fun! osu! should now be fully ready to play! Onwards to your osu! journey on OS X!
Note: osu!lazer (a.k.a. osu!next) is aiming to have the game running natively without these bamboozling steps. Let's hope for the best, but this works best for now!

How to deal with errors when updating the game inside the client
When osu! needs updating, it will say that it has a new version of osu! ready. When you click on it, osu! will show this error:
Don't worry. Though terribly inconvenient, all you have to do is reinstall. When you reinstall the game, the game automatically downloads the most recent version, so it will "update" the game. However, if you simply reinstall, then the game won't save all your beatmaps and data. In order to save / preserve your data, do the following:
- Go to the osu!.app in your Applications folder.
- Right-click and find "open package contents".
- Find the folder "drive_c".
- Open it. It should have multiple folders in it, but find the "osu" folder.
- If you know how, then you can use Cmd + Shift + G to locate it at: ~/Applications/osu!.app/Contents/Resources/drive_c/osu!
- Now, find "osu!.YOURDISKNAME.cfg", the "Skins" folder, and "Songs" folder. Copy and paste them into some folder you can remember. The files should look like this screenshot below.
- Now, reinstall osu! (the whole thing again, delete original and download again) You do not need to reinstall XQuartz.
- After installation, locate the folder again (~/Applications/osu!.app/Contents/Resources/drive_c/osu!)No parentheses
- Put the files you saved in that folder. It will ask you if you want to replace them. Replace them all.
- Now you can play with the new version while keeping your settings.
