A new kind of war

Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare is a popular video game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, released in 2019 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It’s the 16th installment in the Call of Duty series and the reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series. It features an immersive single-player campaign and a multiplayer mode that doesn’t have the popular Zombies mode. 

Its battle royale mode, however, has been turned into a separate game that you can play even without a full copy of Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare. Warzone can be downloaded as a free standalone game—the download reaching up to 100GB for new users. You can play it on Playstation® 4, Battle.net for PC, and Xbox One, and it allows for cross-platform play and unified progression with your Modern Warfare’s save file. 

Not your ordinary battle royale

In Warzone, your playground is Verdansk, a massive city with over 300 landmarks and multiple named zones from Modern Warfare. Each explorable building in the city is unique in design and calls for careful strategy during matches. You can also find drivable vehicles of varying speed, protection, and health meters. You get to fight against up to 150 players on the map and choose either to go solo, get a partner, or team up to three. There are two distinct modes available: Battle Royale and Plunder. 

Battle Royale is exactly what it entails: among the 150 players, you fight to either be the last man, last duo, or last trio standing while escaping the toxic gas slowly engulfing the city. Unlike in other battle royale games, however, you can be revived and redeployed either by being resurrected using items purchasable from the Buy Stations on the map or by winning a 1-vs-1 match in the Gulag after your first death. Losing there will keep you a spectator until your team revives you.

Plunder, on the other hand, is a race to collect and deposit the most in-match Cash by looting them wherever, stealing other players’ Cash, and completing in-match Contracts. Contracts are tasks you can find and activate across the map one at a time. These range from scavenger hunts—where you have to find specific supply boxes—to bounty hunts for a certain player within a time limit. You’re rewarded with in-match Cash, loot items, and special abilities for the map when you successfully complete them.

A new challenger approaches

It’s a free-to-play cross-platform game for anyone and syncs with Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare for those who have it.
