Mac os delete files that didnt successfully download - remarkable
Question:Q:Catalina download didn't quite finish, now can't find the file to delete before trying again
Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.
As I say in the subject line, I tried to download Catalina to my MacBook Pro, a 2015 model, and it downloaded something like 8.1 GB, but it was saying 'calculating', and never seemed to totally finish downloading - and the installation part never started. I tried to download it again, but now it says I don't have enough space - I checked available space before the 1st time, and that 8.1 GB has been taken up by the not-quite-finished-download, I'm sure, but my question is, I can't FIND the file to delete it before trying again, which is bizarre. I've looked everywhere.
Let me add this: I would suspect that if I free up more space, and can try the download again, that I won't have to worry about duplicate files/space usage, as the 2nd attempt should overlay or continue the first attempt. Right?

Check in your Applications Folder to see if the macOS Catalina installer is there. Try to open it. If it will not open, drag it to the Trash. Enter your administrative password to trash it. Download a fresh copy of the macOS Catalina installer.

Thanks. I've got more than enough memory, and before I tried that download, I had enough available storage space. As far as whether the installer is in the Applications folder, I see the Automator in there, which I wasn't familiar with before this happened ... but I don't see anything else that seems to be Catalina-related.

That makes sense, Old Toad. What doesn't make sense to me is that because I know what my available space was before and after the attempted download, it looks like the space was used but there's nothing in the applications folder. Restarting didn't help. I've got a lot of other things going on, but sometime this week I'm going to free up some more space, attempt the download again, and hopefully it'll work.

Set the invisible files to visible with the key combination of Shift+Command+period. Then look in the Applications folder. it might remain invisible until the download is complete. If you find it you'll be able to move it to the trash and delete before you make the files invisible again with the same key combination.

Apple just cannot let things be simple. They seem to go out of their way to make life difficult. Look on the root of the drive for another folder containing the rest of the installation files.
